The Bar and Grill and other 10 fests.

It seems that CBS has taken another step towards their vision of what this "community" should be.  But what do we, the users, feel it should be or become?  If it is true that a community is a place with a common ownership is it not us, the users, who have the ultimate power to define it?  Of course we have very little power or control in the long run.  CBS could flick a switch tomorrow and all we would see is "web site not found".  But I don't think it would ever go there.  We are many thousands and with every page viewed and link clicked we pay CBS out of someone else's pocket.  For that we need to be thankful.  I've never spent a dime here and yet I've received many hours of enjoyment.  I can't really think of another place like that in my "real" world, someone is always making a buck or two everywhere I go.

While I have not spent much time there lately I used to find fellow insomniacs at a thread called "The Bar and Grill".  It was a place where there was always someone home.  A place where many people knew your name and, to a degree, the real you.  It was a place where you could talk about your favorite team without people jumping down you throat.  Or your favorite band, or your wife and kids, or your car.  Any stupid thing that was on your mind.  People gave each other 10's.  Not for having a great idea or agreeing with them but because it was sort of a rule.  It was a way of saying, " I respect your right to say what you want, even if it was the dumbest thing I have ever heard".  Some people came by because they knew that 10's were given out in large amounts to anyone who was civil to the other people on that thread.  These people saw their CBS reputations grow very quickly, and left.  Others came by because they hated seeing friends getting along and wanted to cause trouble.  Many of the regular posters fought those who came to this place to cause trouble and try to tear it down.  They saw their CBS ratings go into the toilet for their effort.  In my mind they define that thread and this community.

CBS has announced a new "matrix".  One that will reward any rating given as an absolute number to be added up to give a user a grand total that is the basis for their rating here in this community.  I propose that CBS further define this new matrix to automatically void any rating received in any "room" or on any thread where the average rating is deemed as "too high, far above the average".  Do not reward participation in any thread that has members rating each other with constant high scores.  Just toss these out, and let those places be.

I have never met better posters or nicer people than I met at "The Bar and Grill".   Take away any advantage or any risk for spending time there and it will not go away, it will just become a true community, within a larger community, where the only reward for spending time there will be the company of friends.

The Bar and Grill and other 10 fests.

Well said Sinatra, what you've said is true. It's a nice place to spend time and the regular's are down to earth and friendly. It was never adveritised as a 10 fest, but it was the original in that regard. Most people there are super stars anyway and could care less about ratings. Rival sports fans co-exisit with each other with no lame bashing. There's been a recent influx of trolls on the thread. Fowl words and disgusting photos seem to be weapons of choice used by these terrorist children. The regulars deal with this themselves. CBS could settle that problem with an ignore button.

Nice post, sinatra!

I agree that we developed our own community within the cbs community and I have enjoyed every bit of it. Where else can you put an Redskin and a Cowboy, a Gator and Seminole, aWolverine and Buckeye and Trojan and a Bruin in the same room and everyone get along? We talk about our teams, our kids, our cars, our weather and everything else that comnes along.

I would like to thank everyone that has helped make the B&G such a fablulous place to hang out!

Peace, GN

The Bar and Grill and other 10 fests.

Well put Sinatra, Amelas and Gator. The Bar and Grill was started one year ago this week. I am proud to say I was one of the early members. I was already a top 10 and did not go there for ratings. As a matter of fact I gave out many more than I received. I gave ratings to bookmark where I left off. It was easy to go back and read all posts I missed even if it was 10+ pages in a day.

Other threads were started just to raise ratings and even stated so in the name of the thread. That never really mattered to me.

I really enjoyed the B & G and came there every day....or especially night. It was the only thread on CBS that was really like a chat room where someone was there 24/7.

I met some people there that have become true friends outside of CBS.

I agree with you guys. The B & G would have continued to thrive even if the ratings there meant nothing, unlike some other threads that exist only for that reason. Yes, some took advantage of the B & G but that was to be expected at the most viewed thread on the site.

I rarely go there any more for various reasons. Some I thought were friends turned out not to be. The trolls were annoying but nothing more. Some infighting and sniping got a bit old.

I am still around and miss a lot of people I used to chat with on a regular basis. Good to see you guys again.

Just my 2¢

Very well put, all 4 of you. I loved hanging out in the B&G 4 or 5 times a week, because even the people that I completely disagreed with, would to nothing but state the differences, and respect the others opinion. I rarely go there anymore, but that is mostly because it is hard for me to find time to relax on the puter.

The Bar and Grill and other 10 fests.

The B & G is my place of residence on CBS. I was there 10 days after it started and pent 90+% of my online time there. I have found other site recently to spend my time at and only visit a little now. How ever, it like the town you grew up in, always home even when you live elsewhere. I am glad to see the spirit continue in the way it was meant to be. As for trolls, there  mean, grumpy old SOBs in every town. Just laugh and walk on by.

The Bar and Grill and other 10 fests.

Well put Sinatra!

I think the new rating system is a step in the right direction. I do not think there is a regular in the B&G that could care less about the ratings, they are used more as a bookmark. If it were decided those ratings meant nothing, so be it, as long as I can still easily locate the people I love to chat with. Being left alone from the riff-raff would be nice, but we have learned to ignore and-or deal with it. I love going there and conversing with of all the regulars, whatever the conversation may be,  I have been there from early on and have met a lot of good people through that thread! And more good people continue to hop on board, is a good concept, yes, a community inside a community....

BTW...miss you over there!

The Bar and Grill and other 10 fests.

Most of us who go to the B&G stay out of some of the mess that occurs on this board.  It is a safe haven indeed, but not if you are being an idiot.

The majority of us who reside there, are not just locked into going there.  The factor of why most go there has 0 to do with ratings.

If people really feel that there should be no ratings for that, 10'fest, anything having to do with "sexiest avatar" or any of the other's that generally the same people, then that is acceptable.  I don't see why it needs to be done, but if it makes people feel better, then take it away.

Don't forget though, quantity of connections and posts do figure into your total score, so it will likely only affect a small portion of most peoples scores.

Sinatra -- You are a real poster person and a kind and aware human being, it is no wonder that you are MIA.  Does the Community ignore the value of posters such as you?  You are a rare person, but someone who is easily recognized as one who deserves respect--no earning required.  It saddens me that the Community, the powers that be, are blind to this.  It worries me that what are admirable traits in a human, and have been so for centuries, may now be considered  faults or weaknesses!  I mean, you know,  just the little things of life, such as trust, passion, open mindedness, awareness, kindness, honesty, a sense of justness, as well as justice, patience, positiveness, generosity, giving, caring, unselfishness, a love of sports, team play, or a love of family or of friendship... and other petty traits .. have they been trashed ... for what?

I'm reminded of the late former Vice-President Of The United States of America, Spiro T. Agnew (1969-73) who, when posed a question by the broadcast media of the era, concerning a political foe (who was apparently unknown to Agnew), responded with the remark, "Oh Yeah, but how much ($s) is he worth?  Has our country, as a Community, been "dumbed-down" to the point where "the mark of a man is his wallet"?  If so, may your god or my god or anybody's god please save us, here in our country of free thought, freedom of (and from) religion and freedom of speech and of gathering (even cyberly).

 Thinking as an individual?

Thinking as an individual?  Thinking as an individual?

Love it or leave it?

Maybe an active Selective Service System IS good for something.

 Must laugh.

Must hope for the future of this World's children.

Yes!  I'm fine.  How are you doing sinatra?  Is the real "old Feline" still with us?
